When Was the Last Time You Reviewed Your Portfolio?
Not checked its value.
Not looked at how much it has grown.
Actually reviewed it.
A few weeks ago, I was speaking to a client about reviewing his investments. His response was simple.
"Everything seems to be fine. Do we really need to review it?"
Instead of answering, I asked him another question.
"When was the last time you serviced your car?"
He smiled and said,
"Last month."
"Was anything wrong with it?"
"No, but it was due for servicing."
That was my answer too.
We don't wait for our car to stop in the middle of the road before getting it serviced.
We service it periodically because we want it to continue performing well.
Our investments deserve the same care.
The challenge is that a portfolio never reminds you that it's due for a review.
It doesn't flash a warning light.
It doesn't make a strange noise.
It quietly keeps moving with the markets.
Meanwhile, life keeps moving too.
Your income changes.
Your responsibilities change.
Your goals evolve.
Sometimes your appetite for risk changes without you even realizing it.
The portfolio you built a few years ago was designed for the life you were living then.
The question is...
Does it still suit the life you're living today?
A portfolio review isn't about finding mistakes.
It's about making sure your investments continue to support your journey.
Sometimes, the outcome is simply,
"Everything looks good. Let's continue exactly as we are."
Sometimes, it may mean making a few small adjustments or rebalancing your portfolio.
Either way, you've taken the time to make an informed decision instead of leaving it to chance.
Here's something worth remembering.
Your portfolio doesn't age because of the market. It ages because life moves on. Perhaps that's why periodic reviews matter.
Not because the market has changed.
But because you have.
So here's a question I'd like to leave you with.
Does your portfolio still reflect the life you're building today, or is it still built for the life you lived a few years ago?
Perhaps your portfolio doesn't need a change.
Perhaps it simply deserves a conversation.
